Last year, she unleashed her debut project All You Need , with standout singles "On & On," featuring Casey Veggies, and the title track. Beyond that, she's a one-homo team, managing herself and remaining completely contained.

Every bit a part of our First Expect Friday serial, Okayplayer spoke with Allyn virtually her African-American and Indian roots, her sound, and the legacy of Nipsey Hussle. We are as well premiering the video for "Cull Upward," which you tin scout below.

How would you describe your sound?

My audio is R&B, soulful. Sometimes it tin can be upbeat. Sometimes I have jazz samples, or I'll play my own stuff. I'm a musician as well. I play five instruments. I'll go in and play pianoforte or violin. I incorporate myself in information technology because I don't always desire information technology to be just beats. Beats are just computerized electronic sounds, it's not actual real instruments. I try to put existent instruments in my music.

What are your family roots?

My mom's from Memphis, Tennessee, and my dad's from Mumbai, Republic of india. They met in college. Information technology was unlike growing up considering it's such different cultures. Black civilisation, Indian civilization. I was blessed to take both sides in my life. I can sympathize both, but I grew up more in an urban black community, so I didn't get to learn much about the Indian culture. That'southward something I'm trying to do now. In my future music, I do want to do some Bollywood samples. Maybe be in a Bollywood movie one day, that's one of my goals.

You're from Sacramento but you at present alive in Los Angeles. How do the ii cities compare?

Being from Sac makes me who I am. I learned the game from Sac. How I move, I represent Sac. Blessed to be from Sac, that'due south my city…I love being from somewhere dissimilar. Sacramento gave me the foundation. Nosotros grew up actually dissimilar in Sac. We never had all these dainty palm copse, prissy stuff everywhere. To come up out here is a totally different lifestyle. I can conform to information technology and then I capeesh information technology more than. I didn't retrieve those opportunities were real or even possible. I was a regular girl from Sac. To be out here doing it is but dope. It's motivating. I hope to inspire other young women and men.

How long have y'all been in LA?

I've been in LA for four years, originally came out here to get to college. I just recently graduated concluding year from Cal Land Northridge. College is when I commencement started actually doing my songwriting. That'southward when I focused more on being an artist. I put out my first single a month earlier I graduated. Kept doing it, dropped a projection, and here we are.

What'd you study in college?

I studied Music Manufacture Studies and minored in Africana Studies. That definitely helped me just being a immature woman. I want to be in rooms with people and know what they're talking about. Take something to add. Having that degree definitely helped me acquire more than virtually the music business and brought me around like-minded people. That was definitely a plus.

Talk about being a classically trained musician.

My mom wanted to play violin at outset, and then she got injured and then she stopped and helped me get into it. I was simply three, she was surprised that I would brand songs at such a young historic period and she got me professional lessons, and I was involved in adult symphonies and adult orchestras equally a kid. I was only 12-years-erstwhile, and the merely women of color in the orchestra total of old people, Caucasians, and Asians. To exist the only one information technology was a lot for me. Information technology definitely helped me but grow up.

I played in TV shows and film and that'due south another way I got my beginning in the industry. Sometimes all I do is just play on my friends' stuff, too. I just played keys on my friend Reason 's album.

Which vocal?

It was "State We In," In the intro playing keys. Reason's dope, he gave me the opportunity. He only hit me up and we built organically there. Just been absurd every since. Besides music, he's a actually good friend of mine. Whenever I see people I know win, I feel like I'm winning. It'south so great, I support him fully. I'grand super proud of how far he'southward come.

Who's "Choose Upward" directed to?

Man, that's directed towards a couple of people in my life. It'southward a situation where ane guy I've been with for a while, I leave him. This new guy I just met, simply he says all the right things. He keeps me happy, interested. I'yard young. I'yard just 22 years quondam. I wanna have fun with the person I'm with, so I might have to cull up if yous're non doing what I need you to practice. [Laughs]

"On & On" is such a vibe. Talk about linking with Casey Veggies.

That was only another organic thing. I met Casey at the studio a couple of times. Then I met him again at YG'due south listening party. After we went in that location, nosotros had linked up in the studio. Swish sent me this crush, I was like "damn this is super dope, this would audio actually dope for Casey and me." We did information technology right in that location on the spot, recorded information technology. It was amazing, me and Casey vibe really well.

You're linking with all these LA cats, how does it compare existence from the Bay?

It'due south just different. That's what I'k trying to practise more than, work with more people from the Bay. Because I haven't worked with that many people from the Bay. I dearest being where I'm from. I love how dissimilar we are. Information technology's a different civilisation. Nosotros take a different foundation. To come out hither and be ourselves, we really unique out here 'cause we're not from out hither. It's dope. I beloved maxim I'm from Sac. I'm always reppin' it.

What is your take on the music industry?

As a young woman, it'south hard. I hate sometimes going to the studio because I'one thousand going by myself or I'll be in other people's sessions — equally a woman, I'chiliad not fifty-fifty best-selling. At that place are so many men in the room, they might think "that's just a pretty girl in the studio." And then they talk to y'all, it'southward like "oh she plays instruments, she'southward educated. She's a vocalizer, songwriter, etc."

Sometimes I feel I gotta prove myself, merely I'm not in competition with anybody just myself. That's one thing I try to keep in heed. The manufacture itself is irresolute with the era of social media. Females are starting to come on meridian. R&B's making a really dope comeback right at present. We headed in the right direction, especially now that I'm in information technology.

First Look Friday: Allyn

What are some goals yourself as an artist at this indicate of your career?

Just to continue making music, do more shows, go on tour, go along collaborating. People accept goals trying to exist the biggest person always — that's what I want, but I really wanna connect to people. I desire to bear upon someone. I want someone to be like "this music really helped me." It'southward almost the people at the stop of the day.

What's a normal twenty-four hours in the life? Walk usa through.

Wake up, make me a kale smoothie. I love kale. I love being healthy. Make me some breakfast if I'1000 not lazy. I'll attempt to work out 'crusade I feel lazy. [Chuckles] I'll probably go to the studio and write. I have a set up in my crib too. My days are e'er random. People volition hit me and exist similar "come hither, come up to this upshot." I ever but get with the catamenia. I never know what is going which is crazy. I need to get better at it, demand to be more organized. My life'southward a picture. I wake up and I might be in a different state tomorrow.

3 things y'all demand in the studio?

Me and nobody. I detest when at that place's 30, 40 people in the studio, chilling, smoking, drinking. I detest that then much. I similar peace. I need peace. I love candles and smelling skilful and ambiance. I'one thousand such an ambiance person. Then snacks, because snacks are my thing. I need some fruit or vegetables. Something healthy, maybe some kale. [Laughs]

What would y'all be doing if you weren't doing music?

That'south crazy 'crusade people ask all the time, "what exercise y'all do for fun? What exercise you exercise when you're not doing music?" I don't really know. My whole life has revolved around this thought of music. If information technology wasn't me playing an instrument, and so it was me singing. If it wasn't me singing, so it was me again getting a degree in Music Business. Maybe I'd practise radio.

Dream collab?

My dream collab would be with Nipsey [Hussle.] RIP. I really wanted to piece of work with him. I've worked with a lot of LA people and Nipsey was my next thing. I was merely talking to people on his team about me doing a hook for him or working in full general. He'south really close with some of my family 'cause they grew up with him in that surface area, so information technology actually hitting me hard that happened. Bless him and his family, I tin can't even imagine. It's sick. It'southward a cold world we live in.

Being hither and seeing everything on social media — I got in my car blow over there too, correct when information technology happened. Seeing how many people he touched and affected, it'southward a beautiful thing. It's bittersweet. He really affected this many people, it's terrible that he had to become similar that. Someone who impacted his community, cared for his people, created jobs, helped the economy, owned businesses. He did and so many things I wanna do. He'southward such an amazing guy overall. I've heard nothing simply astonishing things virtually him. I wish I got a chance to work with him.
